Did you know that the area of the French Quarter where the Historic BK House & Gardens is located was once called Piccolo Palermo? After the Civil War many Sicilian immigrants settled in this area & some of them lived in the BK House. Among those residents was a family named the Giaconas, who ran a successful wholesale liquor business out of the basement of the home. In the summer of 1908, after facing threats from the ‘Black Hand,’ the Giaconas were forced to defend themselves late one evening, resulting in the killing of four extortionists. The story of this dramatic event has stuck with the Giacona family & the BK House & is now known as “the incident”. Today we celebrate our Sicilian heritage with events such as the Italian food & wine pairing that we hosted in our courtyard last Spring (seen in our photo). Join us for a tour of the museum to learn more stories from the nearly 200 year history of this magnificent raised center-hall creole cottage.
