NOLA Vox was born out of a passion project between Sue Englebert and Zach Materne. Sue and Zach had both been lifelong singers, and identified a need to create an all-voiced a cappella ensemble in New Orleans. The Barbershop Harmony Society, which historically had been an all-male organization, opened its membership to everyone, and there was not any BHS representation in town.
After a series of coffee meetings in early 2023, Sue and Zach decided to put out a call out for singers in the New Orleans community who were interested in singing in an a cappella chorus. Unsure if anyone would respond, they were overwhelmed by the over 70 people who signed up over a two week period. From there it was off to the races. Not only did they find singers, they also found their director, Cassie Schmitt. Cassie has a B.A. Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California and a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from LSU with a background in contemporary a cappella.
In August of 2023 NOLA Vox hosted their first rehearsal, and has not looked back since. In May of 2024 NOLA Vox became the official New Orleans chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and begins their 24-25 season in August of 2024
NOLA Vox’s mission is enriching the lives through vocal harmony in New Orleans. The ensemble is open membership to singers of all ages and backgrounds, and our music style includes all genres with a focus on New Orleans artists and Music Styles.
